Few divers there, though.

No clue. But there is a similar picture https://www.flickr.com/photos/87276379@N05/8062184463/in/datetaken/ of Tania Cagnotto from 2012-10-07. I think your picture was probably shot at the same event. So you should look for the name of that event and its starter list. Cagnotto is a high diver, but the girl on your picture seems to be a swimmer.

thanks for the info the event should be the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome, so dozens of athletes, practically impossible to trace the one in the photo

I don't think that she is Silvia di Pietro.
