Touch of Silk by Barry, Peter: Crescent Books- Distributed By Crown Publishers, Inc., New York Hard Back - Don's Book Store
AbeBooks.com: Touch of Silk: 96 Pages. Edition and publication date not given but it appears to have been released in the 1980s. No defects noted a book that is tight with no marks or stamps. The dust jacket has a ¼ inch tear at top of spine and minor wear to edges. Illustrated with more than 150 photographs all in color and many full page. The first recorded undergarment appears on a Greek fresco in Sicily depicting a woman with bound breasts of an athlete. Necessity had created the bandeau top which is still with us today and never more so than in the 1980s when many of the new bikinis and one piece bathing suits reflect the style of that Grecian athlete. The need for lingerie is dictated by women wanting to change their natural shapes to fit styles. The greatest changes took place in the late 18th century when, following the French Revolution and the preceding period of hooped petticoats and corseted figures, the new Directoire style was born. This return to the classical style of late Greek and Roman costume indicated a more liberated and natural line. Corsets disappeared and the waist line moved up to just under the breasts. The classical style reached its climax during the Napoleonic Empire. Skirts were raised to the ankle and suddenly the pantalet, the forerunner of the bikini brief, emerged frilled, lacy and beguiling and lngerie, as we know it today appeared. The liberated woman of the 1920s rejected the feminine shape, skirts rose higher and bust bodices and functional undergarments arrived. Lingerie had always been made of cotton but now French knickers, camisoles and cami-knickers are produced in crepe-de-Chine, silks, satins and laces. The greatest innovation of the 20th century was the cantilevered bra engineer-designed to support and project Jane Russell's bust for a film in the late 40s. It has never changed although it was abandoned for a while in the 60s. Today's lingerie is simple and functional, luxurious and impractical. Lingerie sales to men are about 30% of the market, buying three times a year for anniversaries or special occasions. Garter belts, with matching bra and briefs have been favourites, closely followed by carni-knickers and French knickers in silks and satins with the odd diamond carefully stitched into the embroidery. The biggest influence on lingerie today is that it is bought to be seen. As song says -- In olden days a glimpse of stocking, Was looked on as something shocking, Now heaven knows, Anything goes! Size: 9 3/4" x 11 3/4"
